I'm from New Zealand & I don't have buttermilk at home so used milk with a tablespoon of lemon juice in it. My 9 year old daughter helped also. Easy to make. It has to be one of the niciest Fudge Cakes I've made. It's now a firm favourite in our house & at work. One problem - it never lasts long enough with 3 kids in my house.

Loved this cake! I made it this morning for a friend, and although I didn't have time for the icing, it tasted great even without it. I melted the butter-cocoa mixture in the microwave, and it made my job a whole lot easier. Baking soda causes the cake to rise really well, so for a richer cake, slice it in half horizontally, make double the amount of icing, ice the top of the bottom layer as well, and press the two layers together for a decadent chocolate treat! This cake took an hour of baking in my oven.

Oh well, it is so good! I wished while I was baking this cake that I were a spoon or bowl in which the ingredients were mixed by me to make it. I used 1 cup (minus 1 tbsp) of Fresh milk and added 1 tbsp of lemon juice instead of the buttermilk. Rest of the things I have stuck to this recipe. It's a very nice cake and quite easy too. The fact that it is eggless makes it all the more nice as many people I know don't have eggs at all, hence, I have many more soon going to be "lovers" of this cake! I'd say that if your depressed or low, request mom to make this for u if u love cakes n chocolate - Just put in 1 piece of cake and watch your depression run away for miles from you:) Last but not the least, I loved the deep dark brown colour of the cake when done. I garnished it with some chopped almonds and maraschino cherries that made it look all the more yummy and mouth watering and oh well, my stomach says "Give me more of Depression Fudge cake now and NOW means NOWWWWWW"!!!:)

This was wonderful. I doubled the recipe after reading Charishma's comments and it still came out good. It was also easy to make. I didn't use my mixer at all.

Excellent recipe! The baking does not work the same for me--if I use an 8 inch pan, I have to bake it for 40 minutes or so; I prefer to use a 9 inch pan and bake it for 35 minutes and it comes out perfectly. I love how it stays moist for several days, and it is the perfect size for the two of us at home. I use a simple vanilla butter frosting, throwing in a bit of cream cheese if I have it. Chocolate on chocolate is very good, but I prefer the contrast of the vanilla flavored frosting. One more tweak--if I have some instant coffee powder, I throw a bit of that in as well--really kicks up the chocolate taste.

Oh.My.Gosh. I really don't even have any words. This cake was fantastic. My 3 year old and I made it exactly as the recipe states. We sprinkled some bat and ghost sprinkles on top and had a superb halloween treat.

The cake itself was good, not excellent. I couldn't put my finger on the "odd" taste it had and asked the group to whom I served it to describe it. Their comments were that it "lacked richness" or it "tastes sorta flat". I initially served it with icing. However, it tasted better later when served with warmed chocolate sauce poured over the top. I'll try it again sometime and change my rating if appropriate.

This was the most beautiful cake I've ever made. It looked so pretty just sitting there cooling, I hated to put icing on it. Made this for DH's birthday and it was a big hit. It wasn't exactly the icing that I wanted to put on the cake, but it was good anyway. SUPER SIMPLE! And DE-LISH!

This was just wonderful. I was really tired when I made it and forgot to add the sugar to the base. Folded it in at the last minute in the baking dish and it was still just yummy! My dad said this is a blue ribbon recipie!

Tastes Great! I did skip the frosting and sprinkled some dark chocolate chips on top before baking. Nice rich taste.

I think this may be it. All I have to do is leave the cocoa out of the cake, and make the frosting thinner, I think. I'm going to try this one too. Thank you so very much.

This recipe was most certainly easy to make and easy to eat!! This time I did not have time to do the frosting, but will be making it again soon. The longest part was waiting for it to cook - it smelled so good I didn't want to wait for it to finish cooking before I tried it.
