My family has been using many of the 'depression era' recipes as meal time staples forever because they are so simple and delicious. One of my families basic strategies at that time was using crackers or oats to stretch meat based dishes. You can't even tell its been done and when you use oats it makes the meal a little healthier. For burgers you add a quarter cup of oats (or the same of crushed crackers and omit the salt you would add) per pound of meat. It makes for a heartier burger so you fill up faster and use less meat per sandwich!
