Date Walnut Double Decker

"A recipe clipped from a long forgotten magazine more than 25 years ago. Have made this one for wedding showers a few times."

  • Combine first 3 ingredients and blend into fine crumbs. Press into bottom of a greased 9 inch square pan. Bake at 350 F for about 20 minutes, until edges are lightly browned.
  • Combine brown sugar and remaining white sugar, eggs and vanilla and beat together well.
  • Sift flour and nutmeg with baking powder and salt and add to first mixture.
  • Stir in walnuts and dates.
  • Turn batter into pan over hot baked pastry layer. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.
  • Cool in pan, sprinkle top with powdered sugar if desired. Cut into 18 bars.
