Lived on a dairy farm and aunty used to make these. Served them up with 'fresh' butter and homemade gooseberry jam. Mmmmmmmm Memories......try it and start a memory for your family (times are approx)
- 1 package yeast
- 1⁄4 cup water, about 105-110f degrees
- 2 cups scalded milk
- 1⁄2 cup butter
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups flour
- cooking spray
- Dissolve yeast in water.
- In med mixing bowl combine milk, butter, and salt; cool to lukewarm.
- Add yeast mixture.
- Stir in flour to make stiff dough that still can be beaten with wooden spoon; beat well.
- Cover put in warm draftless place let rise til double about 30 minutes.
- Spray inside side of cans and put on greased Med/Hi hot griddle.
- Fill the cans half full with dough.
- Cook them til they are well risen and bottoms are lightly browned (you might have to adjust the heat to keep bottoms browning to fast).
- Flip cans and all, brown other side.
- Remove to cool, remove from cans.
- To serve split, toast.
- Serve with butter and jam.
