This recipe comes from the 1983 cookbook, Traditional British Cooking.
Directions:

The night before intending to serve this at a midday meal, combine all the ingredients in a heatproof, ceramic container.

Stir well to combine, then cover it & let it stand overnight.

In the morning, set the loosely covered container in a saucepan of water & steam for about 4 hours.

Slice into 4 sections & serve.

It works! They are cooked but still chewy & yummy. Takes awhile, but....there is very little effort involved. I think I used good judgement in using steel cut oats. I'm afraid of what regular rolled oats would be like in the end. Made for aussie swap 2/10!
