Croque Monsieur/ Madam

"Common variations include adding dijon mustard, or brushing melted butter on the outside before cooking. Sometimes grated cheese is sprinkled on the top as well. In truth there are as many variations as there are cooks. Submitted for ZWT 8."

directions

  • Butter two pieces of normal, sliced, bread (yes, this is available in French supermarkets).
  • Place a slice of ham cut to the size of the slice of bread, and some semi-hard cheese, on top of the first slice of bread (often gruyere cheese is used).
  • Put the other piece of buttered bread on the top, squeeze it together, and put in the oven for 10 minutes until the cheese has melted and the bread is toast.
  • Adding a fried egg changes the name to Croque Madam.

  1. A grilled sandwich for sure but most certainly not a Croque Monsieur or Croque Madame. Missing is the bechamel sauce which makes the sandwich what it is.

  2. and not to sound stupid, do you butter the inside of the bread, the outside of the bread or both? Also no temperature given.

  3. A great sandwich! I used whole grain bread, a nice smoked ham and gruyere cheese. I did add the dijon mustard and I heartily recommend the addition, it added a lot of favor. The oven method of toasting the sandwich was perfect, it freed me to do other things and the sandwich came out a perfectly toasted light brown. I cooked it at 350F for about 15 mins and I did flip it over once while it was cooking. I'll make this many times!

  4. No offense but this is not a Croque Monsieur. The actual recipe is a very delicious and rich sandwich as it is covered in a bechamel sauce. Try it with top notch ham and cheese on a brioche bread covered in bechamel and you will find bliss.

  5. So why the picture of the Croque Madame? As well as being the wrong sandwich (for the title), it hides what a good Croque Monsieur looks like. And not to (just) sound snooty, I prefer the style served by Les Deux Magot (read A Moveable Feast if you're not familiar). They give you two open-face sandwiches (with béchamel!) topped with grated gruyère. That and an €8 300ml (10 oz) bottle of Coca-Cola light and I'm a happy boy.

Tweaks

  1. yes I added the bechamel sauce which is what turns this into a real Croque Madame or Monsieur

  2. Cant wait to try this, but I need to know the oven

  3. Boy this was just great! I used bacon instead of ham and loved the method of cooking in the oven - so easy. I did add the fried egg to make a croque madam and really enjoyed - thanks for sharing the recipe! Made for ZWT8, Chefs gone WILD!

My Family and I moved to South Africa at the beginning of 2007 to be missionaries. My Husband is the Pastor of a church in Eden Park, a township in the Jo'burg area. We are having a great time. My kids love it (3 of them, 1 born here). We have got to do many exciting things( pet lion cubs, feed giraffes, eat Zebra(gross!)and other meats(Warthog was surprisingly the best, go figure) and swim on a beach with penguins, to name a few). I have always loved to bake but just got into cooking since moving over here. There were a lot of things I couldn't find over here(and still can't) that we were wanting so I started searching for good recipes for everything from sausage, salad dressing and root beer,to enchilada sauce, Macayo's baja sauce(posted), and Applebees hot wings! A fellow missionary turned me on to this site and My husband got me a membership for this last birthday. I am loving it!
