Crock Pot Ham Bone and Beans

"Many variations to Ham Bone (or Hocks) and beans but this is pretty much how I remember it from my childhood. I find by not soaking the beans they have better texture and flavor.I use Great Northern Beans as my favorite choice of bean for this recipe. I have used 15 bean mix with good results just omit the ham flavor packet."

Questions & Replies

  1. Has anyone tried cooking on high for 4 or 5 hours versus low for 8? Were the results similar?

  2. Can I omit the bay leaves?

  3. What is the nutrition value of this recipe? Looking for carbo

  4. Can I use a left over spiral cut ham and if so, since it is already cooked would cooking the soup in the crock for the 8 hours as instructed be too much for the ham

  5. My family loves a big pot of beans cooked with a ham bone. I have used this recipe for years except I add a can of pineapple tidbits (drained). Large or small pot it is always just one can. We love it!

Reviews

  1. Outstanding! I didn't monkey around with the ingredients, and used 8 cups of the chicken broth and a meaty ham bone. It was absolutely delicious!

  2. This was very good! I had a very meaty ham bone leftover from Christmas dinner. I used kidney beans that I soaked overnight (I had already started soaking when I found this recipe), more onion and some carrot, but left out the celery since I don't like it. This cooked all day on low. We took the ham bone off and cut the ham and put it back in, and then added 2 bags of boil in bag brown rice (we opened the bags and poured it in) with it cooking on high. Nice on a cold windy night, and there is enough to freeze for another meal.

  3. This turned out awesome. I followed the directions with the exception- I used a 15 bean mix, 4 cups low sodium and 4 cups regular chicken broth. I used one ham bone and I did pre soak my beans. This will be my go to bean soup recipe from now on!!

  4. Holy yum! I followed the recipe but I added an 8oz can of tomato sauce and 3 coarsley chopped sweet potatoes to my crock pot. The sweet potatoes came out incredibly creamy/tasty! I also added about 2/3-3/4 of a cup of orzo to the crock pot about 15 min before serving (I used orzo only because it was left over in my cupboard. It was fine but elbow macaroni would have been more appropriate). Wow. I will certainly make this again!

  5. I made it mostly as directed, but doubled it for a large gathering. I soaked the beans overnight, then simmered on the stovetop for about 6 hours. I put in one ham bone from our Thanksgiving ham and 1 ham hock. It was delicious.

Tweaks

  1. I cubed the carrots and pressure cooked for 40 minutes with a natural release.

  2. add 1/2 cup organic brown rice and used organic vegetable broth instead of chicken. I also used 2 cans of great northern beans. I put 1 can in at the start. Added the second can and rice when I deboned the ham about 4.5 hrs in. I did cook in the crock pot the full 8 hrs even with the canned beans. It was great and enough to share!

  3. I made this soup from our Easter Ham bone. I added a pound of bacon to the soup & I also added the brown rice. My husband loved it. Our Airedale Terrier stole the ham bone from our counter top. It was wrestle mania to get that bone back from the little thief. Gave him & his sister just a taste of soup. They loved it. Am sending some over to my daughter's later.

  4. 12 hours slowcooker time on Low if you have a medium size slowcooker. 3 meaty ham hocks instead of four...about 1 3/4 lbs total Pre-Soaked beans for 25 minutes in two cups boiling water

  5. Used Knorr chicken bouillon granules to make the chicken broth.

Perfect as posted and plan to make this recipe again! 4 stars - Liked it a lot and will make again but will probably alter the recipe slightly. 3 stars - OK but to make it again would require major changes to the original recipe to suit my tastes. 2 stars - Really didn't like it.
