I first tried this same recipe a few years ago as well. The canned stuff will never cross my doorstep again! For anyone with doubts, please just try it - it is SO simple & really does only take a few minutes. You don't have to be an experienced cook to make it successfully either. I add sugar to taste, starting with 1/2 a cup & increasing as needed. I've also made it using half sugar, half Splenda. The orange juice really does add a very nice flavor, in place of water. Although I don't recall how much, I also add a little ground cinnamon. Everyone loves cranberries now! I've read reviews where some cooks double the batch & save some for an ice cream topping.
I loved this basic cranberry sauce recipe and the orange juice adds delightful flavor. It's so easy, I can't see the need to buy the canned stuff!
used 2 bags and less sugar...amazing thanks so much!
We really enjoyed this recipe as written. The tartness was subdued. This is going on my holiday menu permanently! Thanks for sharing!
This is the second year in a row that I made this. Last Thanksgiving I had a guest over that wanted to have fresh cranberry sauce, and not the stuff out of the can! I was a little intimidated, because I had never made cranberry sauce before. This stuff is so easy to throw together, and the taste....oh so much better than the canned kind! Thank you Karen...for showing me that it is just as easy as opening up a can of the store bought jellied mess~and I will make this every Thanksgiving!!!!
I love cranberry sauce and don't see a reason to ever look for another recipe. This one is really easy and delicious. Give it a chance to chill (I made it the day before) and it gets much sweeter. If you try to eat it right away it will still be pretty tart.
I usually don't like cranberry sauce, but this was great! My dad couldn't stop telling me how much he liked it. I used half orange juice and half water. I also added 1 and 1/3 cups sugar. I cooked mine a lot longer than 7 minutes though. I kept watching it while it simmered. I stirred and waited for more cranberries to pop. Then I put it in a bowl in the refrigerator, and we ate it that night.
Perfect! I do think that the berries need to cook a little longer than the "popped" stage. My set up just fine with a little extra cooking.
Excellent basic recipe. I used Mango Orange juice and a few dashes of allspice, and it turned out to be the best cranberry sauce I have ever had! I will never eat it from a can again.
