My mom has made this for me as long as I can remember. As kids, I remember my sisters and I going through lots of toasted bread to get every drop of the dish.

Ingredients Nutrition

  • 12 cup butter, melted
  • 23 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 23 cups milk
  • 2 (6 1/2 ounce) cans crabmeat, drained
  • 2 tablespoons onions, minced
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
  • sliced sandwich bread

Directions

  1. Blend butter, flour, and salt; gradually stir in milk.
  2. Cook over medium heat until thickened.
  3. Stir in crab meat and onions.
  4. Stir in cheese until melted.
  5. Pour into 4 to 6 Au Gratin dishes.
  6. Toast and butter bread.
  7. Cut each piece into 4 triangles.
  8. Place 4 to 6 pieces of toast into each dish (arrange around the edge of the dish) to use for dipping.

This was really delicious. I used imitation crab meat and some leftover sauteed onions. Broke up the toast in a bowl and poured the Au Gratin over it. Excellent!

My family ate this as fast as I could serve it. I added 2 tablespoons of minced celery! Tastes great as a dip for carrots and celery too.
