Coq Au Vin (Crock Pot)

"I've always heard of this recipe and it sounds delicious but making it this weekend will be the first time I've tried it. My crock pot bit the dust the other day and the new one I purchased had a recipe book tucked inside the pot. (what a nice surprise!) This happens to be one of the recipes."

  • In large skillet saute the diced bacon and green onions until the bacon is crisp.
  • Remove and drain well.
  • Add chicken breasts to the skillet and brown them well on both sides.
  • Remove chicken and set it aside.
  • Put the onion, mushrooms, new-potatoes and garlic in crock pot.
  • Add browned chicken breasts, bacon and green onions, salt, pepper, thyme and chicken broth.
  • Cover and cook on LOW 8 hours or HIGH 4 hours.
  • Add Burgundy Wine during last hour of cooking.

  1. Great flavor! I followed the recipe as written. The chicken was not as tender as I would have liked but very tasty. Next time I will sauté the mushrooms before putting them in, I think this will help them to be a little more tender. Thanks for sharing.
     
  2. My SO loved it, but I thought it was a little boring, although it smelled wonderful while cooking, and was as simple as could be. I'd probably add more veggies next time, maybe get a stronger red wine. I'm also lazy, so I skipped browning the breasts, so they didn't look too pretty, but cooked just fine, and used about three tablespoons of pre-cooked bacon pieces instead of making bacon myself (they're real bacon, by the salad dressing in the store). If you are looking for a subtle flavor that's easy to do, this is a great recipe!
     
  3. This recipe was pretty good. I omitted the potatoes and used carrots instead. I also added more salt and pepper and a little Accent to taste.
     
  4. Icelandic lamb is so good & much less costly than chicken (go figure). I used súpukjöt (shanks & lrg stew meat pieces after the leg of lamb & chops are removed). The type of meat & my love of crockpot cooking made me pick this recipe. I trimmed the lamb well, sprinkled a light coat of seasoning salt & cooked the meat 6 hrs on high. Then I added the rest of the ingredients (+ carrots & 6 cloves of roasted garlic) & cooked 6 hrs on low. It was wonderful! Just correcting an error I made above. I cooked the meat 6 hrs on LOW (not high) ...
     
  5. I loved this! My SO doesn't like mushrooms, so I used mixed vegies instead. That was the only thing I did differently. This recipe is in one of my cook books too. It was great comfy food for a cold, damp Sunday! Thank you!

My name is Nita and I am a 50 y/o grandmother of 3 beautiful children; a 13 y/o granddaughter, a 11 y/o grandson, and an 5 y/o old grandson. My daughters are 34 and 22. Yikes! Where did the years go?? I rescue wolves and have 4 of my own...my big ole furbabies. I've placed appx 30 wolves in wonderful forever homes. Hobbies include cooking/baking, reading, gardening, writing poetry and short stories, and collecting angels, lighthouses and teapots...just to name a few. One of my passions is doing my part to take care of our natural environment and one of my pet peeves...hmm...that's a tough one...ok, 2 of my pet peeves are people who litter and people who talk loudly on cell phones while eating in a restaurant or shopping in supermarkets (give us a break, folks...at least lower your voices!). I love trying new recipes and meeting people. I'm a real nature nut and adore animals, having had some very "unique" pets. I love camping, fishing and picnics. I lived in Texas for 25 yrs but have recently moved back to my hometown in Oklahoma to be near Mom. She's elderly and her health isn't good, so it was time. Through the grace of God Mom and I are now neighbors! It broke my heart to leave my two girls and their families on the coast in Texas although knowing I'm where I need to be at this time makes the transition easier. Am very much looking forward to making lots and lots of new friends here at Zaar!
