This chowder was very good for the amount of prep and cook time. It was simple to make and was very tasty. I used 2% milk and butter, but I would imagine that using cream would make the recipe a little more luxurious. I would also imagine that you could use any firm fish or clams in this chowder.
This was the best cod chowder I ever had. I loved this recipe. It allowed me to change it slightly to suit myself. I left out mushrooms, I used partly whole milk and half & half, cuz that's what I had on hand. I used fresh corn I just bought at a roadside stand. I added a dash of Maggi's, cuz I like it in practically everything. Thank you, Lennie, for sharing this fabulous, loving recipe.
A friend brought us 2lbs of Cod they caught in the waters off Salvage, Newfoundland. It demanded a Royal recipe, I'm very glad I found this one. Sorry I cheated a bit! (1/2 cup, Half&Half & 1/2 pat of butter, got no willpower)
Thank you for sharing your lovely recipe Lennie. I added a little extra cod, salt, pepper and butter. Used a combination of milk and half n half cream for a slightly thicker liquid.. This recipe made a lovely satisfying chowder, that was flavorful, silky and filling. We really enjoyed this chowder. I bet this would be a great base for clam chowder.
I added 1 clove of garlic and cooked the potatoes with 1/4 cup clam juice instead of the water. It was fantastic. Topped it with parsley.
Had Lennie's husband not developed a severe allergy to white fish would we be without this tasty soup? A simple, tasty beach house meal. Add an october evening, offshore breeze and an Australian Shiraz. I have a severe aversion to celery so I replaced it with bacon and thickened it with a bit with flour.
Very enjoyable, I will definitely make it again! I followed the recipe almost exactly - I used cream instead of milk and olive oil for the butter. Yum!
We enjoyed this simple concoction. We used 1% milk and a small can of mushroom stems & pieces instead of fresh mushrooms, and it still tasted very good. I was surprised that the pepper came through so convincingly. Very tasty.
