ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1⁄2 cup cocoa
- 1 1⁄2 cups flour
- 3⁄4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1⁄2 cup shortening
- 1⁄2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 egg
- 1⁄2 cup boiling water
directions
- Combine all dry ingredients.
- Add shortening, egg, milk, and vanilla.
- Add boiling water and beat for 3 minutes.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

I followed the recipe exactly and these are really nice. These cakes were light and airy, and a great taste. When we were children my mum used to bake chocolate buns as we called them, and we always ate them hot from the oven - yummy! I topped them with icing sugar mixed with lemon juice. This brought back many happy memories.
