Cocktail De Camarones

"I ordered shrimp cocktail at a Mexican restaurant not knowing what I was going to get but loving both Mexican food and shrimp I figured it would be good. It was delicious. So after a few attempts of creating this dish at home I finally got it right, and we have been enjoying it ever since. My boyfriend and I make a meal out of it."

  • After you chop the tomatoes, onions and cilantro mix together in a bowl, add the diced jalapeno pepper.
  • Add about 1-1/2 cups of tomato juice (V-8 is what I like to use).
  • Then add about 2 tablespoons or more to taste of lime juice (lemon juice will do if you don't have lime and fresh is always better) Add garlic salt to taste do the same to the salt and pepper.
  • Add the shrimp and avocado.
  • Do a taste test to see if you may need to add one or more of the above ingredients.

  • Serve with crackers.

  1. We made this recipe twice for a family reunion of cooks and aficianados. Everyone loved it so much the first time that we had to make it again.

  2. your right its make again but i use spicy v-8

  3. Really tasty and easy cocktail. I used colossal shrimp, cut them up into bite sized pieces and I used red onion, not white or green. I also added 4 minced cloves of elephant garlic( we love it). For the tomato juice I used Clamato. Also added some minced celery for added texture and of course quite a few dashes of tabasco sauce. Didn't use any jalapeno though.

  4. Thank You! I used to order this every time at my favorite Mexican Restaurant but I moved. Now I can make it myself! I made a huge batch with just a couple of changes- used large 4 tomatoes and only 2 Tbsp of red onion finely chopped. Also the Gormet Garden pre-chopped tube of cilantro- it measured pretty much the same as fresh and worked perfectly. Left out the jalepeno (I get it in my eyes every time I try to chop) and just added hot sauce. Oh, and a little Tequila (2 OZ) for a kick. You didn't really taste it but I imagine that it made it better. It was a big hit at my party- I know I will be making it again very soon!

  5. Thank you so much, Grace. This was exactly what I was looking for. I had leftover Dirty Shrimp in Beer Butter Sauce (we had gorged ourselves on this), so I rinsed and used them for this recipe. I left out the cilantro (we just can't develop a taste for it), used 2 avocados and 2 jalapenos with seeds. I used Clamato juice since it was all I had and served with Julio's tortilla chips (true restaurant style chips from South Texas). My DH thought it had too much juice, but don't tell him that was the best part, and I drank it in the kitchen. I'm looking for one of the giant margarita or martini glasses to serve it in next time. It was fantastic!
