I'm from the south where barbecue sauces are vinegar based, I now live in CO where it is ketchup based... which I really don't care for. This sauce goes with everything from chicken to pulled pork. This is what I make when I want a taste of home.
- 1 1⁄2 cups cider vinegar
- 3⁄4 cup spicy brown mustard
- 1⁄2 cup ketchup
- 1⁄3 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 3 garlic cloves, mashed into paste
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cayenne
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- Mix all ingredients in saucepan over med. heat.
- Simmer 8-10 minute or until sugar is fully dissolved.
delicious! i liked this so much better than bottled bbq sauce! i only did half the cayenne though- and it was still very spicy (2 teaspoons would have probably been too hot for us)- we enjoyed it on pulled pork sandwiches-thanx for a great recipe:)
This is an awesome sauce. I made it for pulled pork sandwiches and was not disappointed. I knew I was the only person in the family that would prefer this sauce so I halved the recipe and used half again of the brown sugar. I also used chili sauce rather than ketchup. Thanks for a great recipe.
I agree, I like the vinegar based barbecue sauces too! I make this barbecue sauce with recipe #208349 for pulled pork along with recipe #317641 for Cole Slaw. The only difference in my recipe is I use 1 cup mustard, 1 teaspoon cayenne and add pan drippings from the pork (I skim the fat off the top and add ½ cup water and cook it in saucepan over medium heat until reduced by half) I then add the barbecue sauce and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Yum
