Chocolate Waffles

"This recipe by Alton Brown is chocolately without being overwhelming. We enjoy them topped with a red berry jam, such as strawberry or raspberry."

  1. While these weren't my favorite waffles, my family really liked them. When I made them, I took the other reviews that the chocolate flavor wasn't strong, into consideration. So, I used Hershey's special dark cocoa powder and mini chips. I also used a buttermilk substitute making my own for some of the buttermilk. When I did this, I used chocolate milk to make it.

  2. I didn't expect to love these so much! As previous reviewers have said, they aren't overwhelmingly sweet or chocolatey. They were a perfect variation on traditional waffles. I served them for breakfast when my daughter's friend spent her 14th birthday with us. Will definitely be requested again. As Christmas is getting close, I am thinking of using Sherri35's suggestion to make the leftovers into ice cream sandwiches - I'm thinking peppermint ice cream! MMMMMM!

  3. They are good but were not our favorite. Thanks Irmgard.

  4. I made these exactly as posted and they turned out quite nice. Definitely not a strong chocolate or sweet taste - in fact the chocolate taste is too subtle in my opinion. We had these for breakfast w/whipped cream and powdered sugar and a sliced banana. Only then were they sweet enough. I think they would make great ice cream sandwiches so I'm going to freeze the leftover waffles. Thanks for posting!

  5. We had these for dessert last night topped with vanilla ice cream and a little hersheys syrup. This was so good and easy. This would be good topped with bananas for breakfast. Thanks Irmgard!
