Chocolate Sweetie Cupcakes

  • Preheat the oven to 190°C/gas5. Put 18 paper cases into bun tins.
  • Weigh out 50g of butter and set this aside to make the icing. Add the remaining 125g to the sugar and beat together until light and creamy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, beating well between each one. Add 1tbsp of flour with the last egg.
  • Sift together the remaining flour, baking powder and 25g of the cocoa, then fold into the cake mixture.
  • Divide between between the cake cases and bake for approx 15 minutes, or until they spring back when pressed lightly. Remove from bun tray and place on wire rack to cool.
  • To make the icing, put remaining butter in a pan with the milk and golden syrup and heat gently until the better starts to melt. Remove pan from heat and sift in the icing sugar and remaining cocoa. Beat together to create a thick and glossy icing.
  • Spoon a little onto each cup cake and decorate with the Smarties.
  • Note: You can use all kinds of sweets to decorate -- feel free to experiment or use your faves!

  1. I'm so sorry I don't like giving bad review but I wasn't very impresed with this recipe. I was looking for a treat to take with us on a camping trip to celabtate my sons 10th birhday. I saw this recipe and after reading the good reviews thought I'll give it a try. To strt with I'dlike to say that the icing came out beautifully I had to add some exta milk, and it came nice and smooth like choc spread. I would prefer if it was to the cake on the ingredients though. The cup cakes where disapointing to what I was hoping. They came out flat or even worst, in a dip, and dry in texture.
     
  2. *Reviewed as Recipe of the Week in the Kid Friendly Cooking Forum* Easy to make and great clear instructions. A moist fudgey cupcake with a rich sweet chocolate icing. When I made the cake mixture it was quite thick and didn't seem to be enough for 18 cakes. It did make 18 traditional small cupcakes/pattycakes - perfectly. A good kid sized cake. I made these for my little friend next door for her 5th Birthday party. Photo also being posted. Updated to add- I've now made these gluten-free and they tasted great.Used a gluten-free flour blend and added one teaspoon of xanthan gum. I used gf baking powder to make the flour self-raising, dutch cocoa powder and pure icing sugar for the icing. The gluten-free version looked much like the regular wheat flour cakes that I made.
     
  3. The kids loved making these for their pack ups> They each chose their favourite sweets to put on top. All I had to do was the washing up!!! Maybe could have managed with regular icing instead of being made with golden syrup (very sweet, but the kids looooved them).

If I had the time and the money, I would spend all day every day trying new recipes! My husband has a 'recipe score' which is this: 1: "Add it to your recipe book - I loved it and wanna eat this again soon!" 2: "Interesting....I will enjoy eating this again." 3: "I cleared my plate but don't expect me to eat this again...ever." However, I rate 'Zaar recipes the by the 'Zaar standard, so don't worry. Oh and fyi, I have a problem being negative so will probably NEVER give a rating less that 4*!!! Other than cooking, I love anything arty-crafty and enjoy painting when I get the chance, which is rarely these days. I used to sell a lot of my creations and do things to order but just don't have the time at the moment. I have a passion for gardening almost as strong as that for cooking. I tend to have 90% of it in pots though as I can't bear to leave it behind when we move - therefore we don't have a lot of stuff that we'd like to have as it wouldn't like being confined to a pot! I take great pride in my garden and love the summer months (the few that we get in the UK) when we can eat outside... and being a typical man, my husband likes any excuse to get the BBQ going - enough said! By the way; I'm on a mission to re-educate people about soaking cous cous for use in North African recipes.,,just so you all know....it is traditionally STEAMED & not soaked! Most of the North African recipes I have have been taught to me by my mother in law, sisters in law etc. A few have come from very old cookbooks. It has taken me a long time to get the dishes into some kind of recipe form as basically we "eyeball" the majority of the ingredients. Bear with me whilst I try to get the rest of the recipes in order!... On a personal note, I abhor the mistreatment of animals and have taken care of many abandoned or injured animals over the years. Similarily, I love to help children and that is why my husband and I are in the process of becoming foster carers. I have a thing about being polite and having good manners - they don't cost anything after all. Something that bugs me is when you hold a door open for someone and they don't even acknowledge you or if you need to go through a door and they won't hold it for you but let it slap you in the face!
