For someone who has never made a chocolate pie, this is not a great starter recipe. I tried to make this today & my pudding never thickened, despite having rigorously followed all directions. If someone who has successfully made this could update the recipe with actual cooking times (for example - how long is one expected to cook the mixture on the stove? I spent almost an hour to no avail.) As a consequence, the pie was runny and I can't serve this to my guests. Very disappointing.

This is a wonderful homemade pie to make for the family. One little thing we all found distracting was the overwhelming taste of the vanilla in the pudding. I know that next time I make this I'll be using more like one teaspoon of vanilla instead of a tablespoon - it really took away from the flavors of the whole pie. I made a homemade graham cracker crust for this dish. Be patient while cooking the pudding - it does take a while to cook on low but it is well worth the time as it comes out very smooth instead of lumpy if you cook it on low for a long while. DD made a request for thick pudding so I made this minus the pastry shell and it was fabulous on its own and would be wonderful in a pie. Addictive and rich - a great chocolate fix.
