- 1⁄2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine, softened
- 1⁄2 cup shortening
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1⁄2 cup unsweetened cocoa
- 2 1⁄4 cups flour
- 1 1⁄4 teaspoons baking soda
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1⁄3 cups water
directions
- Cream butter, shortening and sugar in a large bowl.
- Add eggs and vanilla and blend well.
- Combine dry ingredients and add alternatively with water to creamed mixture.
- Pour into greased floured 9" round layer pans or two 8 inch square pans.
- Bake 350 for 35-40 minutes for 9" layers or 40-45 minutes for 8" pans.
- Cool 10 min and remove from pans.
- Cool completely and frost as desired.
