Chinese Spicy Beef Lettuce Wraps

"From OregonLive.com. I loved the beef lettuce wraps from a restaurant in Montauk, NY called East by Northeast. This was the closest I have found to recreating it with a few minor adjustments from me."

directions

  • Spray large, heavy skillet with nonstick cooking spray. In skillet set over medium-high heat, brown ground beef; drain if necessary.
  • Add garlic, sherry, soy sauce, sesame oil, chili paste, five-spice powder, white part of green onions, water chestnuts and minced chile. Turn down heat and simmer about 10 minutes.
  • Add cornstarch-water mixture to beef mixture and stir until it thickens slightly. Add green part of green onions and cook just until heated through (onion tops will lose their bright green color if cooked too long).
  • Separate lettuce leaves, wash and pat dry. Arrange lettuce cups on platter and serve alongside beef mixture.
  • Serve with my Sweet Soy Dipping Sauce (#144178) A must-have for the lettuce wraps !

  1. Good! I've made these twice so far. I think that using ground beef makes it really easy. The first time I used ground bison meat. Once I used bamboo shoots instead of the water chestnuts because that's what I had on hand. I agree with another reviewer who said these really need the dipping sauce to make them fabulous. I made my dipping sauce similar to the one listed by using hoisin sauce, sriracha, lime juice, a touch of sugar and enough water to thin. A keeper, Valerie in Florida, thanks so much for posting!

  2. Loved this!! I doubled up on the sauce ingredients, which I'm glad I did, the beef just sucks it all right up. Served with "Sweet Soy Dipping Sauce" as recommended was perfect :)

  3. Made this tonight for a Chinese Dinner Party. Easy and Delicious! I didn't make the dipping sauce suggested, although I served the lettuce wraps with a boughten chili teriyaki sauce, yummy. We got great reviews, this recipe is a keeper, loved it!! Thanks for sharing..

  4. Very very good! I have made lettuce wraps with ground chicken but never with ground beef...DH loved them. I did add some ginger and some snow peas that I wanted to use up but otherwise followed the directions. Will be making these again. Thank you! Made for Zaar Alphabet Soup tag game.

  5. This was yummy and easy to put together - there was several levels of flavor and texture and this was a hit in my house. Wrapped this in iceberg lettuce with shredded carrot and red pepper.

Tweaks

  1. Excellent the only thing I did was add rice vinegar instead of sherry wine. I also added a little hoesen sauce about 1 Tbs. Great recipe

  2. Fabulous spicy lettuce wraps! I made a few changes to suite our tastes: briefly grilled thin strips of steak instead of ground beef, more garlic, and about an inch of ginger minced instead of the jalapeno. I didn't even need to use the cornstarch mixture - everything came together perfectly. The dipping sauce you recommend sets everything off perfectly. This will be a regular feature at our dinner table!

  3. Wow. My DH can't stop eating these. Delicious. Followed the recipe exactly except couldn't get to the Asian market for the chili paste so used hot chili sauce instead. Yum.

I currently live in Stuart, Florida which is a great place to live. I moved here from Orlando many years ago to live the life of a beach bum and have gotten quite good at it. I am actually a Yankee, but becoming more Southern by the day. During the past several years I found an absolute love for cooking. The man in my life loves to eat so we make a good match. I absolutely love Recipezaar and can no longer live without it. I think it is great that I can see what other people think of the recipes before I try them. I have some favorite chefs and reviewers on this site and I know when I try their recipes I can never lose ! My passions are my family, my fiance', my cat (Tasha), the beach, and now cooking. My pet peeve is anyone that abuses animals. AND THIS IS A BIG PET PEEVE ! I am currently a Paralegal but can't see myself doing this forever. If I did not work, I would probably spend my time cooking and taking care of the 50-animals that I would most likely adopt.
