A recipe from one of my mothers old handwritten cookbooks. A great Australian tradition!
- 1 egg
- 1 cup self raising flour
- 1⁄2 cup walnuts
- 4 ounces melted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1 pinch salt
- Mix all ingredients together well and put into shallow slice tin, bake in a moderate oven at 375 deg. for 20 minutes.
- When cold cut slice into squares.
This is a slice from my childhood so I just had to make it. It was easy to do and delicious to eat. I doubled the recipe so just had to cook it a bit longer.
I always thought a 'slice' was like a quick bread. I googled 'slice tin' & it looks to me like a brownie pan. This is a really rich recipe ~ everybody liked it & it was easy to make! Made for Aussie Swap 7/08.
