Cherry Pretzel Dessert

This is a very easy to make dessert that is good for a group. It has the right combination of sweet and salty!

Ingredients:

Servings: 16

• 2 cups crushed pretzels
• ¾ cup sugar
• ¾ cup solid margarine , melted
• 2 envelopes whipped dessert topping mix
• 1 cup cold milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese , cubed
• 1 cup confectioners' sugar
• 1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, combine pretzels, sugar and margarine.
2. Set aside 1/2 cup for the topping.
3. Press the remaining mixture into an ungreased 13x9 pan.
4. In a mixing bowl, beat whipped topping mix, milk, and vanilla at high speed for about 4 minutes or until soft peaks form.
5. Add cream cheese and confectioners sugar and beat until smooth.
6. Spread half of the mixture over the crust.
7. Top with cherry pie filling and the remaining cream cheese mixture.
8. Sprinkle with the reserved pretzel mixture.
9. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Hey there, this was a wonderful dessert. I made it for a baby shower and it was a big hit. Very creamy cheesecake-like filling with the delicious cherries. Merlot is right. The salty crust goes well with the sweet creamy filling. Looked beautiful too. Thanks a bunch.

Made this for potluck @ work and still get asked for the recipe. Changed 2 things- I NEVER use margarine (unsalted butter instead), and added just a dash of almond extract to the cherries (I used dark cherries because that's what I had). A hit! Thanks for the memories...
