Cheesy Chive and Onion Toasties/Jaffles

"Here is a recipe for that age old appliance called a jaffle iron or you can use the new age appliance called a sandwich maker. This is a good camping recipe if you have a jaffle iron."

ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 brown onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups grated cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chives, chopped
  • 8 slices white bread

directions

  • Heat frypan over high heat, ad oil and onion.
  • Cook about 6 minutes till well browned, seta side to cool.
  • In a small bowl, combine cheese, chives and onion.
  • Divide this between 4 slices bread.
  • Top with remaining bread and place in heated jaffle iron.
  • Cook over low flame for 2 minutes till golden.
  • OR use sandwich maker according to instruction booklet.

  1. This made an easy and very filling lunch. I used jarred onions which made the preparation time less then two minutes. I used my Panini press to toast the toasties. The toasties were yummy herby soft cheese with a crispy bread, delicious! Thanks KateW for a wonderful easy recipe.

  3. Yum! I cheated a little & used some Berenberg Caramelised Onion in a jar with a lovely vintage cheese and fresh chives from the garden..so simple but oh so delicious!!
     
  4. So messy and so yummy. Made as written using a mix of cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese. I also had too much filling for my bread, was using slices from a small loaf, had I used a large loaf it would have been perfect. Think next time will fall SarahBeth’s suggestion and use garlic bread, but do not get me wrong this recipe is great just as is. Will be making again. Thanks so much for the post.
     
  5. Just love a good vintage cheddar with caramelised onion and a tough of garlic chives and in a toastie it is heaven on earth. I did use wholemeal/wholegrain bread and made in the sandwich maker. I scaled back for 2 sandwiches but had enough filling for three though our slices of bread are small, so the DM and I had a wee pig out. Thank you katew for reviving memories of making toasties in caste iron jaffle makers around the camp fire. Made for Edition 9 - Make My Recipes.
