- Saute the oatmeal and salt in half the butter until golden brown.
- Add the water; bring to a boil. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally and adding water if necessary, until the oatmeal is cooked into a gruel. This will take about 90 minutes.
- Add the sliced potatoes. Cook about 30 minutes until they are tender.
- Stir in the grated cheese, remaining butter and nutmeg if desired. Add additional hot water if it's too thick.
