This cereal was first served in Dr. Bircher-Benner's Zurich clinic in the early 20th century. His patients enjoyed it so much that they took the recipe home.

Yum, this is a keeper! Easy to make up a batch and so healthy to eat in the morning. Thanks Morgaine, this will be a favorite. Made for Australian Recipe swap-July 2011.

Ingredients Nutrition


  1. Preheat over to 300 degrees.
  2. In a medium bowl at oats. Sprinkle with cinnamon and vanilla sugar and pour maple syrup in a circle on top. Stir until mixed well.
  3. Generously coat a large baking sheet with no-stick cooking spray. With the spoon, spread cereal evenly on the sheet. Bake untilthe flakes are golden brown (around 15 minutes), stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove cereal from oven and allow to cool. Pour cereal into an airtight container and add nuts and raisins, mixing well. The cereal may be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  5. To serve, divide cereal into 4 bowls. Peel and core an apple and grate it on top of cereal. Add milk to taste.
