I cut this recipe out of the Sunday coupons 5+ years ago. I make them every Christmas for gift giving.

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Mix flour, sugar and egg.
  3. Cut in ½ cup margarine until crumbly.
  4. Stir in walnuts.
  5. Reserve 2 cups of crumb mixture.
  6. Press remaining crumb mixture firmly into a greased and floured 13x9 in pan.
  7. Bake 15 minutes.
  8. In a saucepan over low heat melt caramels with sweetened-condensed milk and remaining ¼ cup margarine.
  9. Pour over prepared crust and top with reserved crumb mixture.
  10. Bake 20 minutes or until bubbly.
  11. Cool and cut into bars.
  12. Store at room temperature.

Was almost tempted to add some chocolate chips here, but at the last minute decided not to (wisely so, I think!) ~ the bars were A GREAT TREAT without additions!
