A very rich cookie base, topped with condensed milk mixture, topped with meringue.

  1. To make the base: cream the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. add the egg yolks and mix well.
  3. add the sifted flour and baking powder and mix well.
  4. press into a greased jelly roll pan.
  5. to make the caramel filling: combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and stir over low heat until dissolved.
  6. do not allow to boil.
  7. spread over the base.
  8. to make the meringue: whip the egg whites until stiff but not dry.
  9. gradually add the sugar, beating continuously.
  10. spoon over the caramel.
  11. bake in a 350 f.
  12. oven for 50 minutes.
  13. cut into bars while warm.
  14. note: if the meringue is becoming too brown, cover with a sheet of wax paper halfway through the cooking period.
