This looked like a good basic icing recipe. I don't remember where I got it from though.
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- 2 (16 ounce) packages confectioners' sugar
- 1⁄2 cup water
- In large mixing bowl, beat together shortening and salt. Gradually add vanilla, confectioner’s sugar and water. Beat constantly until fluffy. (Icing will be stiff.) Cover bowl with a damp cloth while using so it doesn’t dry out. Food coloring or color paste may be added to match wedding colors.
- Use a decorator bag and tips to pipe desired shapes onto cookies. Use writing tips for initials and highlights. Use leaf tip for flowing wedding gowns etc.
I don't understand why no one else mentioned the salt in this recipe- I thought it looked like a lot but I did want to cut down on the sweetness that's usually there. So I used 3/4 tsp of salt. And my frosting is SALTY! I have to use it anyway because I don't have another 2 lbs. of powdered sugar. I won't rate the recipe however. In hindsight, the only salt I have is sea salt, and I think it is often more powerful than table salt. SIGH. Lesson learned.
Thank you for a simple and delicious frosting recipe. the salt and the other reviewer's suggestion of almond extract made this taste wonderful and cut the sweetness. Just yummy! Instead of water or milk I used 2 Tbls. of non-dairy coffee creamer in 1/4 cup od warm water to give it a very creamy texture and flavor without having to worry about keeping it refridgerated. Nice and firm that mixed up well and held up to frosting ad piping. Thanks again!
