Brunswick Stew

"Got this from our preacher's wife and has got to be, hands down, the best Brunswick stew we have ever eaten. I used this recipe for the Thanksgiving dinner at work and took home first prize in the "other" category and grand prize over all."

 • This can be cooked on high for 4 hours but you need to watch it more closely for sticking.
 • Goes GREAT with cornbread!

Questions & Replies

 1. Will this freeze ok? Thx

 2. So what about the potatoes, lima beans and garden peas? Recipe doesn't say how many/much of those. Also, is the vinegar white vinegar?

 1. This was delicious and so easy! I didn't change a thing with the recipe and it turned out perfect!!!

 2. Followed the recipe but added 1/2 cup chicken stock and 12 ozs frozen lima beans. Also, the corn and cream corn I used were thawed frozen, as well. The last couple of hours, I added steamed potatoes that were cubed, because that's how my Grandmother from Savannah made it. Can't get too much more authentic than this!

 3. We were introduced to Brunswick Stew while living in Atlanta and enjoyed it soo much! It's not available up north in grocery stores and only one local eatery has it on their menu. I do not enjoy cooking, so the need to cook three meats was offputting, and I never made the stew.

Then I found this recipe. OMG! The canned BBQ pork and beef are not available here, but are available prepackaged in the meat departments of our local grocers'. I didn't have vinegar, so I didn't add sugar. And I didn't find it necessary to add salt or pepper. My grandson who never met an onion he liked said he would close his eyes so as not to see them because the flavor is fantastic. As for me, opening containers of already cooked food and mixing them together in a crock pot is a cook's dream. Now my problem is that I keep returning to the pot and taking a small portion to reconfirm yet again that this is Brunswick stew to die for. I hope there's enough left for dinner..........

 4. Wow! This tastes just like the Brunswick stew we get at our local bbq here in Alabama! Yum! I used refrigerated containers of bbq since they were on sale. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! No more picking it up when I can make it at home!

 5. What an easy, "dump" recipe to make a dish that typically takes much more work. I served it at a fall event and EVERYONE asked for the recipe. I took Dissie's advice and used stewed tomatoes and no sugar and also added some Texas Pete for a little heat. Thank you Wattamess.
