Brookville Sweet & Sour Coleslaw

Total Time
Prep 5 mins
Cook 30 mins

From the old Brookville Hotel restaurant in Kansas, famous for their fried chicken, slaw, and creamed corn, all served family style. (The creamed corn is Mom's Famous Crock Pot Cream Corn) This was the recipe that finally got me to eat cole slaw; everything else on their table was so good I decided to take a chance and was hooked forever! Cook time does not include initial chilling of cabbage & total servings vary depending on serving size.

Ingredients Nutrition

  1. Cover shredded cabbage and refrigerate several hours or until well chilled.
  2. 30 min before serving time, mix ingredients in order given.
  3. Chill and serve.

I am also a native Kansan and was a friend of the Martin's late daughter, Brandy. This recipe brings back memories of good food and friends while growing up. It's the best cole slaw that I have ever eaten and in this day of preshredded cabbage, it is so simple to make. First off, thanks for not only posting this for me, but for promoting my recipe. I am going to have to change mine to promote yours as well. I am a native Kansan, and grew up eating at the Brookville hotel. My parents came to visit me, and I surprised them by making a Brookville style dinner:Fried chicken, Mashed potatoes with cream gravy, cream corn, the coleslaw, biscuits, relish plate and cottage cheese, and pie and ice cream for dessert. They were so happy and it tasted great!! This coleslaw is honestly the best I have ever had, it reminds me of when I was little and we got to go to the Brookville Hotel as a special treat. Thanks so much for posting this!

I have never had coleslaw prepared this way before. It was awesome. Although I must say that I preferred it the following day, as it did not taste quite as sweet. It was so creamy. A quick and easy recipe to make. So glad that I tried this recipe. It was a perfect accompaniment for our Jerk Chicken and Rice & Peas dinner. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely recipe.
