Though I do love my morning bowl of oatmeal, there are days when I want to have something different. This promises all the benefits of a grain based breakfast with a twist in flavor. Found this untried recipe in an old stack of recipes clippings and posting it before I loose track of it again.
- 1 large pear, cored and chopped
- 236.59 ml fruit nectar (use pear, just had to post this way for Zaar specifications)
- 236.59 ml water
- 236.59 ml uncooked bulgur
- 1.23 ml ground nutmeg
- 1.23 ml cinnamon
- 0.25 ml salt
- 113.39 g low-fat vanilla yogurt (1/2 cup) or 113.39 g soy yogurt
- Place the bulgur, pear nectar, 1 cup of water, bulgur, cinnamon nutmeg and salt into a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Add the diced pears, mix, and cover pan. Reduce heat to a very low flame and simmer until liquid is absorbed and bulgur is tender, about 12-15 minutes.
- Spoon into 4 bowls and top each with 2 tablespoons vanilla yogurt.
This was very good. With Toni's permission I used apple and apple juice insted of pear. The flavor was wonderful. The only thing I might had done differently is to add just a little bit of butter. I forgot the yogurt. But this was a great change of pace from plain old oatmeal.
This was a great alternative to oatmeal. I used frozen peqaches and orange juice as that is what I had on hand and it was great. I can't wait to try it with pears, the bulgar gives a nice "chew". Thanks again!
The perfect combination of chewy and creamy, sweet and savory. This dish is quick and inexpenisve while tasting rich and time consuming. Even my husband, who's not a big fan of hot cereal concured and asked for seconds. One note: I used Yoplat custard style vanilla yogurt, as I had it in the house. It may have added to the creaminess factor.
