directions

  • Before each use, wash the mold with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge.
  • Spray or smear the inside of the mold with a small amount of vegetable oil, then wipe out the excess.
  • Put the gelatin mix in a large bowl and add the boiling water.
  • Stir about two minutes until the mix is dissolved.
  • Stir in the cold water.
  • Stir in the evaporated milk and food coloring.
  • Adjust coloring until it is the perfect pinkish-gray and stir.
  • Pour the mixture in the brain mold, stopping about 1/4 inch from the top.
  • Place the brain mold in a shallow bowl so it will sit level, and refrigerate overnight.
  • To remove the brain, shake the mold gently until the gelatin loosens.
  • Place a flat plate upside down over the open side of the mold, then flip the mold and the plate together.
  • Lift the mold off, leaving the brain on the plate.

  1. How easy is this?

  2. I am making this at home and then traveling about an hour the next day to work. Will the recipe survive not being chilled after it has set? I've made jello's before that have melted. Not this recipe but something else. Any ideas?

  1. This is such a fun recipe! I turn the mold onto a lettuce-lined plate and put gummy worms around and coming out the brain. I wonder why no one ever wants to eat it? :o) You can also make it a "bleeding" brain by putting in raspberry preserves in the center of the brain (fill halfway, chill, add preserves, chill and add remaining jello). Ewwww!!

  3. Recipe worked beautifully! Did not have blue food coloring on hand so I used 15 drops red, 15 drops green and 5 drops black. Everyone was impressed but grossed out! :) Mission accomplished.

  4. This recipe worked like a charm. The brain Jell-O came easily out of the mold. We used cherry Jell-O and didn't add the additional food coloring because we wanted that bright red look. For an extra touch, we added some gummy worms to the mold when it was partially set, and then surrounded the Jell-O brain with the extra gummy worms for that extra zing! Easily the coolest dish at the Halloween potluck.

Tweaks

  1. I made this for my child's Halloween party. I put it into a feeling box. I'm made it with an extra packet of plain gelatin to make it more firm. It was not consumed.
