This is the cocktail for all of you who aren't martini drinkers. The addition of just a little cherry juice makes for a very smooth drink.
- 56.69 g Bourbon (use a good quality, such as Maker's Mark)
- 21.26-28.34 g sweet vermouth, depending on taste
- 0.5-0.75 ml Angostura bitters (or orange bitters, if you can find them)
- 4.92 ml cherry juice (from the jar of maraschino cherries)
- 1 maraschino cherry, preferably on its stem
- In a mixing glass, half-filled with ice cubes, combine all the ingredients, except the cherry. Stir a couple of times.
- Strain into a cocktail (martini) glass. Let the cherry drop to the bottom.
It's good, but definitely use good cherries, not maraschino. I used dark morello cherries from Trader Joes. Maraschino are sickeningly sweet!
I "mixed" this up a bit by using Luxardo cherries and half sweet Vermouth and half dry Vermouth, garnished with Lemon twist.Use a good Bourbon....the better your ingredients are, the better your finished drink. If you like Rye whiskey use it instead of the Bourbon. You will then have a classic Manhatten. Cocktail recipes are good places to start, but most find it's all about personal taste preferences. Juice from the jar? Really? Unless you're using Luxardo cherries I'd forgo the almond flavoring in the mass produced maraschinos. And you forgot the essential orange flavor. My own variation uses Fee Brothers Aromatic bitters, a wash of Luxardo Marschino liquor and a good inch or so of orange peel or a dash of orange bitters. The Fee Brothers adds a subtle hint of cinnamon.
