  1. Added oatmeal, breadcrumbs, and an egg to try and bind these together, but they were just too sloppy. We froze them than tried to cook them, but that didn't work either. Good flavor, but definately requires something else to hold it together...we really were excited for them and wanted to like them, but they were a failed attempt here that ended up in the trash:(

  2. My daugther and I were looking for a new bean pattie recipe and decided on this one. I read the previous reviews and read the recipe throughly. Other readers mentioned being too wet didnt drain their beans. Our patties held together fine and were delious. We made the mix up earlier in the day and let it rest in the fridge until cooking time. Used a ice cream scoup to form patties, for uniform size. great way to include meat free alternatives to meal rotation. Thanks!

  3. Excellent with revisions. I used ideas from other recipes to improve the flavor, help the burgers hold together better and to reduce mushiness. I doubled the spices (but not the cayenne pepper), added 2 egg whites and 1/2 cup of dry bread crumbs (use more or less depending upon how moist your patties are.) Recipe makes between 6 and 8 patties; the burgers look great and people love them. I served them on whole wheat rolls with salsa and guacamole. Thanks northernmom for giving me a great base for my recipe!

  4. Very good, I enjoyed it a lot. I had to use kidney beans, since I couldn't find black beans at the grocery store. I probably didn't drain them well enough, since the paddies turned out to be a little mushy, but that was quite ok for me. They tasted very Mexican (? I think). But all in all, I really liked the taste of them and will most likely make them again, too! Since I had a lot left over today, I fried it up, added corn, tomatoes, very few un-mushed kidney beans (love 'em) and wrapped it up in a soft tortilla together with grated cheese. That was so great. I will definitely do THAT again, too!

  5. I altered it a lot - I didn't want to ( not REALLY ) but it was driven by necessity :( I suppose I halved it - I used a 15-ounce can of black beans , half an onion , a whole pepper, a chopped jalapeno ( no poblano ) , 1 tsp ground cumin , 1 tsp paprika and 2 tablespoons cilantro - no cayenne pepper. I would have loved to make it as it was but I really couldn't , soory. They definitely stuck together - a bit mushy on the inside but they ARE burgers after all. THe outside was a bit too carbonised for comfort, but that was probably me because the oil got too hot . Anyway ,the burgers were yummy and I enjoyed making them. Thanks !

Tweaks

  1. These were great! I was worried a little at first that I would have to add an egg or something to get these to hold together, but they were just about perfect. I subbed sauteed brown onion for the red onion and didn't have any cilantro. I'm sure it would have been even better with the cilantro. I loved them though- the fact that the bean texture stayed through was great. I served them in pitas with sour cream and cheese and with "Simply The Best Baked Onion Rings" (#82297). I will definitely be making these again.
