I found this recipe in a Bird and Bloom magazine a few years ago. Great for spearing through tree branches by a window or on a tray feeder.
- Combine the cornmeal, flour, grated bread crumbs and baking soda in a medium bowl. Add the raisins and sand and mix thoroughly. Then add the bacon drippings and water, stirring well.
- Spoon the dough into muffin tins and bake at 350° for 15 minutes. Cool the muffins to room temperature before serving. Store the leftovers in the refrigerator until it's time for a refill.
My little backyard birds thank you so much for posting this recipe. I cannot honestly said I "tasted" this recipe but the birds have and they are tweeting their 5 stars most definitely! I had to make a small change in that I did not have bacon drippings so used shortening and peanut butter mixed to give it the fat needed to hold together. I received 12 regular size bird muffins - I was sure not to fill the tins too high because I wanted these to fit depthwise in my suet cage feeder. Made for the Bargain Basement tag game in the Cooking With Friends Tag Game forum! Thanks for a keeper for my outdoor feathered friends.
