directions
- Heat oven to 375° degrees.
- Mix thoroughly shortening, butter, sugars, eggs and vanilla. Blend in remaining ingredients. (For a softer, rounder cookie, add 1/2 cup flour.)
- Drop dough by rounded teasponfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes or until light brown. Cool slightly before removing from baking sheet.
- NOTE: If using self-rising flour, omit soda and salt.
- For Salted Peanut Cookies: Substitute 2 cups salted peanuts for the chocolate pieces and chopped nuts. Before baking, flatten each cookie with bottom of glass that has been greased and dipped in sugar.
- Betty's note: ( Red Spoon) To bake fresh cookies on short notice, keep a supply of cookie dough in the freezer. Wrap it in an airtight freezer container, aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Thaw it until just soft enough to spoon onto baking sheet. Both cookie dough and baked cookies can be frozen and stored from 9-12 months.

I have been using this recipe for more than 40 years. I always add the extra 1/2 cup of flour for a rounder cookie & I add a cup of coconut flakes. It makes the cookies moister. My family & friends love them. As a matter of fact, I quit making any other type of cookie but this recipe since it's always a hit.

This is the ONLY chocolate chip recipe worth using! I add an extra teaspoon of vanilla to mine, and as crazy as this may sound, I smack the tray down after taking it out of the oven. My new challenge is trying to make the gluten free version of this. Haven't been able to eat my favorite cookie in 7 years!

This site used to be awesome. It was at the top of its game when it was called Recipezaar, but that was many years ago. The site was purchased by Scripps and belly-flopped into mediocrity. A few of the faithful members remained, hoping to wait out the storm of corporate nonsense. But alas, it never got better and just continued on its terminal path to nothingness. So most of the loyal members have vanished and made homes at better recipe sites.
