We love this yummy sauce best over vanilla ice cream, but it's also great on hot apple pie! My kids pick Hot Caramel Sundaes over birthday cake every year! This sauce makes great teacher and/or Christmas gifts (pour in 1/2 pint jars and tie with festive ribbon). Remind them it needs to be refrigerated!
- 1 cup butter
- 1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk
- 1 3⁄4 cups brown sugar
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- Melt butter in heavy saucepan over low heat. Add milk and sugars. Bring to a rolling boil over medium heat stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute.
- Cool slightly.
- Pour into blender, add vanilla, and cover and blend on medium until smooth. Serve over vanilla ice cream. Store covered in refrigerator up to 2 weeks (It never lasts that long at our house!).
This sauce is delicious! Not butterschotchie like alot of other caramel sauces. Mmmmm. Can hardly wait to use it on ice cream! I didn't use a blender--just whisked it briskly for a minute or so. It still turned out fine. Thanks for posting!
Sooooo goood. Have been looking for a good recipe for this for many years. Thanks!
This is astoundingly good! I almost had a heart attack with the amount of sugar in the recipe, but realized that a quart is really a lot of sauce. I didn't feel like pouring the hot sauce into my blender so I used an immersion blender right in the pot to blend it all up. I served this over apple cake, an excellent combination! Also, since I'm liable to drink this stuff straight from the fridge, I put half in the freezer. I'm sure that a few minutes in the microwave should be just fine. Thanks for posting such a yummy sauce!
