I didn't think I could improve on my cherry pie--WRONG! This replaces it in a heartbeat. Turned out beautifully. The only change I made was to give the upper crust an egg white wash, then sprinkle with sugar. Thanks, Luby for another winner.

Hi, Luby! Made your pie for Thanksgiving and it was absolutely "delicious". The best Cherry pie I've ever made and the family loved it! The only change I made was to use 3 cans of pitted tart cherries, though I still used 1/2 cup of juice. I skipped the food coloring. I was out of almond extract (which I usually use) so used vanilla. Thanks so much for posting!

Great tasting pie! Do want to warn anyone who tries to make this. I made it EXACTLY as directed and when I went to check on it around 50 mins it was very liquidy! I was freaking out thinking the pie was ruined but it was not! I covered the perimeter crust with foil and baked it for 15 mins longer. The filling was still very loose when I took it out but after it sat and cooled for a bit it firmed up right away. It is a very good cherry pie- more tart than sweet (like you would get from a cherry pie filling out of a can). I will definitely make it again.

Good flavor, easy to put together. PLACE A COOKIE SHEET UNDERNEATH lined with foil because a lot of liquid will bubble out and make a mess. My cookie sheet was loaded with burnt on sticky filling when it was all done.

Love this. This was one of the first pie recipes I ever used and boy am I glad! Comes out great, and just sweet enough with the amount of sugar in the recipe, as I don't enjoy super-sweet pie.

Oh my gosh, your recipe is amazing!! This was the first time I've ever made a cherry pie, so I was really pleased that it turned out so well!! I didn't change a thing... it made a devilishly good "Vam-Pie" for my Halloween party :) I'm gonna go eat another slice right now!!

So glad you posted this recipe--I made this over the weekend for my crew of hungry farmers who were planting corn--they loved it! Definitely a keeper! Can't wait to make it with the cherries from our cherry trees!

This is a wonderful cherry pie! I made it yesterday for a Super Bowl get-together and everyone raved about it. I sprinkled the top with some granulated sugar before baking (be sure to have some foil under the pie while baking- this is a JUICY pie)and served it with a scoop of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream.Yummmmmmy good! This is a keeper- thanks for posting this,Luby!

I didn't have any almond extract but pie was SO good without it! Best cherry pie I have made in my entire life, no joke. And Soo easy too. Will have to try it with the almond extract next time.

Followed recipe exactly. I have always loved the way almond extract complements cherries, but it didn't come through too much in the finished product; I might try 1/2 t next time. The kids and I would have liked a sweeter pie, but dh loved it as is. I used an egg wash and did a cherry design instead of the lattice.

This was my first attempt at making a cherry pie and it turned out great! I also brushed egg wash on crust before baking. I made this for my hubbies 50th birthday and he loved it, (with vanilla ice cream). Mine was not liquidy at all. Thanks for an easy delicious recipe

I've made this a few times, but haven't posted a rating until now. My dad loved this recipe. It reminded him of the cherry pie my grandmother used to make. Thanks for posting...very yummy!

I made this for my sons and they loved it! Only thing they said was that it could have been just a tiny bit thicker..that could have been my error tho.

A good review is nothing new for this recipe, but I wanted to express my appreciation. I was asked to make a cherry pie for Thanksgiving, and having never made one, I looked to recipezaar for guidance. Because I was making a 10" pie, instead of an 8 or 9" one, I increased the filling amount, using 3 cans of cherries and increasing the other ingredients by 50%. I held the almond extract to a scant 1/4 tsp and added the same amount of vanilla extract. Bonus: the one cup of filling that wouldn't fit in the pie shell baked nicely in its own little dish, so I could sample the completed, baked filling without cutting into the pie. The pie was a big hit yesterday, so this recipe will go in my Thanksgiving recipe book for future years. Thanks to Luby Luby Luby for sharing the recipe, and to all the reviewers who encouraged me to give it a try.

Luby, This really will be the best cherry pie...when I follow your directions. ;) I listened to another reviewer's advice and cut the sugar to one cup because I don't like sickly sweet..big mistake...it made the pie a little too tart. Also, I don't like the taste of almond, but have found it's a wonderful addition to peach and cherry pie so I used it. To those of you that are replacing the almond with vanilla, I say give it a try...you can't really taste it...it just adds depth. Thanks for a great recipe sweety. UPDATE: I made this wonderful cherry pie again and followed the recipe exactly...and it really is perfect. Do not change anything and the end result will be the best cherry pie, ever!

This is the best Cherry Pie, absolutely the best. I made this just as written, it will be my only Cherry Pie. Thanks, Luby what a wonderful recipe!! You must try it, I love the fact you don't cook the filling before baking, makes it so much faster!!

OMGosh!! What a delicious pie, and I made it! How impressive this pie is . . thanks to Luby. I used 1 cup Splenda (husband is diabetic) and 1/4 cup sugar, no red food coloring, and used vanilla vs. almond extract (no likey the almond). No problem with runny juices, pie was total perfection! I purchased an awesome cherry/olive pitter (OXO brand) for approximately five/six cups of fresh cherries. THANK YOU for making me look good, and feel good about my first homemade "cherry" pie!

This was the first fruit pie I've ever made. I made this pie for X-mas eve 2008 (went to my boyfriend's family) and it was a HIT! Most of the men polished it off before any of the women got a chance to try it. There were MANY compliments. I used the Most Incredible No Fail Pie Crust also found on this site. I will definitely be making this pie again!
