Ok so I'm going to be one of those people as someone posted earlier, that rated high and changed it a bit. I thought this cake was a very good base to altar to your own personal tastes. I added a teaspoon of whole grated nutmeg and an extra teaspoon of vanilla. I left the nuts completely out and used the entire cup of oil. When i made the sauce I added a teaspoon of vanilla and salt to taste, creating a a salted Carmel sauce. The only thing I think was a bit off was that there wasn't quite enough salt in the cake, but the salted Carmel remedied that problem. I let my sauce cool 10 mins and added it to a warm cake. It was perfect. I will make this for Christmas Eve Dinner!!!
Excellent! I didn't have apple juice so I used sour cream. I served it with whipped cream and Carmel sauce.
I made this cake with some fresh MacIntosh apples and followed the recipe exactly. Sadly I have to agree with other pinners who said this cake was bland. It was not moist and had no flavor. Maybe with the tweaks others wrote about, it would be better, but I would not make this again. In my opinion, there are much better recipes to use up my apples :(
The title of this cake as the BEST apple cake is right on! I can't believe how flavorful it is without the addition of any spices. Especially delicious warm out of the oven!
I've been looking for a good apple cake recipe forever. With a few easy modifications this one is delicious! Like others I substituted 1/2 the oil for apple sauce, reduced the sugar by 1/4 cup and added cinnamon. I did not use the streusel at all and for us it wasn't necessary. Everyone loved it. This is a keeper!
My Dh loves this cake just as it is . It's on the sweeter side, but sure does fill your tummy. I have brought if to many functions mainly in the fall, and I'm always complimented and asked for the recipe ! Sweet ,moist, & delicious !
This is the best apple cake I have ever tasted. Firt time making it and wow so moist and tasty. Best way to use up your apples. I used granny smith. I have put this recipe in my collection of recipes.
My whole family likes sweets, but this cake was SO sweet, that neither of my little boys could finish even one small piece. That has never happened before when I gave them cake. I followed the recipe exactly (except substituted pecans for walnuts). The flavor of the cake is good, but the sweetness is overwhelming. I'm sad now that I used a whole cup of brown sugar, because I can't buy that at the stores where I live.
Made this today. It was wonderful! Took it to a party. Got lots of compliments. Everyone loved it, especially because it was still warm when I took it. This is a keeper! I used half oil/half butter in the recipe. It was really moist, not oily at all.
This is really better than I expected due to I very very seldom use fresh apples for baking. It turned out really beautifully brown due to I used a dark brown sugar. I also followed others advise and used half oil and half applesauce. It isn't to sweet or sticky. I tried a corner piece for which I love the corners and after eating it the taste was gone in my mouth but my brain was saying more...Thanks for sharing.
