Beef & Beer Pies

"What could be more Aussie than the humble meat pie with the addition of another Aussie favourite..beer! I found this recipe in the Herald Sun & just had to give it go. For convenience the meat filling can be made up to 3 days in advance & refrigerated."

  1. Good combination of flavors. Next time I would use 1/2 as much bacon (personal taste).

  2. Made this is as a full pie (enough for 6 to 8 easy). Did omit the onions due to allergy issues and subbed beef stock for the red wine. I think it would have been better still if I had used a more robust beer such as a stout instead of the Hahn Ice I used. Will make again but buy the right beer for it, instead of using what the DH has there. Thank you Mandy, made as a recipenap for Aussie/Kiwi Swap #19 August 2008.

  3. Loved it! these were tasty indeed... I liked the red wine and beer additions but would use less red wine next time , just for personal preference. I made mine with just the pastry tops, next time I will make a full pie with bottoms as well. I also omitted the mushrooms since I'm allergic to those but don't think that the ommission would have detracted from it in any way. Please see my rating system: a wonderful 4 stars for a yummy recipe. Thanks!

  4. This is a great recipe. Easy to throw together and makes a delicious pie. I made exactally as written but using slightly less mince (500g) and slightly more mushrooms. For me this made 20 pies in my breville pie maker. Dave is the pie judge in our house and he loved these pies. Thank you for a keeper that I will use often for pies for my freezer.

Melbourne I live on a 5 acre property in the Dandenong Ranges Victoria, Australia, having moved from the burbs when I became pregnant with my now 15 year old daughter Alyssa. Once my daughter was born I became a stay at home mum as I couldn't bear the thought of putting her in daycare. She is the light of my life, I never imagined myself as a mum when younger but now wouldn't have it any other way. Alyssa was made a big sister on the 19th April 2010 when our cheeky little boy Blake was born. I love cooking and experimenting with new recipes so quickly become addicted to Zaar as it was previously known & still use it regularly. In addition to being my kids taxi  I also spend my time, reading, gardening and of course shopping. I'm lucky enough that we have the space & so love growing our own fruits, vegies & herbs, this also means we have plenty of room for animals & at the moment have 2 dogs, Max, a Jackshund who's 6, Fletcher, a Kelpie who's 4, 6 cats Snowpea, Fergus, Ginger, Tango, Annie & Cookie, 4 chooks & 2 Ducks. As well as our pets, we also have a lot of native animals around our area, we have kangaroos, wombats, echidna's, possums as well as rosella's, galah's & Cockatoo's hence the name of where I live..
