This recipe comes from "Better Homes and Gardens, Junior Cook Book" from 1955. My mom made these when she was a kid, and for us when we were kids! It's a nice "sloppy joe" style sandwich without the tomato sauce.
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2⁄3 cup chopped onion
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1 dash pepper
- 1⁄4 cup water
- 1 can condensed chicken gumbo soup
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
- Cook meat and onion together until meat is browned.
- Add remaining ingredients and mix.
- Cover; simmer gently over low heat 30 minutes.
- Stir occasionally.
- Spoon into 8 buns.
I love this sloppy joe recipe. I add some worstershire. Don't let the gumbo soup fool you, it's wonderful and even better as it slow simmers.
This is a wonderful and easy recipe! Great for people who don't really enjoy or just want a change from they the "red sauce" sloppy joes. I always wondered what people were talking about when they talked about sloppy joes having rice in them! Also wonderful to make up and place into a crock pot for parties. Very tasty, thanks for posting.
My favorite sloppy joe recipe, just like my mom used to make. The longer it simmers, the better the flavor.
