I found this recipe in a cook book from the 1800 while trying to recreate my husband's grandmother's biscuits. DH say they are close enough for him.
- 2 cups sifted pastry flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon chilled shortening or 1 tablespoon butter
- 3⁄4 cup milk
- Into 2 cups of sifted pastry flour, sift and mix one level teaspoon of salt and four level teaspoons baking powder.
- Chop in one level tablespoon chilled shortening or butter, wet to a stiff dough with about three-fourths cup milk or half water and half milk.
- Toss out on a floured board, pat it down and roll one-half inch thick. Cut into small rounds and bake in a hot oven (450° F).
this makes 9 biscuits .baked for 15 minutes . don't worry that there is not to much oil these are very good .they rise wonderfully
