Baked Sweet Potato

"This is the BEST way to eat a sweet potato. We have baked sweet potatoes with our steaks instead of Idaho potatoes. It's a nice complement to chicken and beef - or any other meat that I can think of! This can also be made on the grill or tossed in the coals if you are camping!"

  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Bake yams for 45 to 75 minutes (bigger yams take longer to cook).
  • When they are done, the outside will have darkened and the inside will be soft.
  • You may see liquid from the potato oozing out and charring.
  • When the potato is sliced open, the inside of the skin will be charred black from the caramelizing sugar in the potato.
  • This is a perfectly cooked potato.
  • Mix the sugar and cinnamon together and set aside.
  • To serve, slice a potato down the center.
  • Add two Tbs of whipped butter, then sprinkle some cinnamon/sugar over the top.

  1. One lil' suggestion, Try brown sugar instead of granulated sugar with the sweet potatoes. We enjoy ours this way and would never go back to granulated sugar. *smiles*
     
  2. Don't forget to prick the sweet potatoes a few times all over with a fork. I also put a piece of aluminum foil under each sweet potato, so that the sugar (that oozes out as the potatoes cook) doesn't drip on the racks or on the bottom of the oven and burn. (Why make more work for yourself?) Other than those "changes", this recipe is dynamite for baked sweet potatoes! Thanks, Tish, for posting! :)
     
  3. We are diabetic, so I just use butter and cinnamon. The yams are so sweet already they dont need any added sugar. :o)
     
  4. Instead of Granulated sugar and cinnamon, I use honey and nutmeg. Nutmeg is more flavorful than cinnamon on sweet potatoes in my opinion.

  1. Once you plate the sweet potato, Here are a few suggestions. Dress the sweet potatoes with Maple Syrup (Grade "B" if you can find it) and sprinkle on some Maple Sugar along with some butter. Alternately, you can use "Sweet Treat" a combination of cinnamon, sugar and vanilla from the good folks at Cajun Power (www.cajunpowersauce.com)...either way you will enjoy your sweet potatoes just a LITTLE bit more if you follow my advice

  3. This is an easy recipe. Very tasteful. I did used brown sugar instead of granulated, a little numeg and then the cinnamon and of course the butter. I used Smart Choice instead of butter. Great flavor.

  5. I love sweet potatoes and this is the first time I ever baked one. I really appreciated the info in the recipe instructions on how to tell if a sweet potato is cooked thoroughly. My bf doesn't like sweet potatoes (silly man!) so I bought myself just one yam to try this with. My yam was probably medium in size, and after 45 mins, I could smell a bit of the liquid burning and I the skin was crisp-feeling on the outside and I could feel that the flesh had pulled away from the skin on the inside. I squished it with my fingers (using a pot holder) and it felt tender, so I cut it open. The inside skin was charring, so I figured it was ready. Not quite, I found part of the flesh was still not tender. I was worried about putting this back in the oven already cut open, but figured I might as well try. I squished the sides of the cut potato back together and let cook another 20 minutes. Perfect! I used dark brown sugar instead of granulated. I used Smart Balance with Flaxsweed Oil instead of butter. I just estimated the amounts of ground cinnamon, brown sugar, and the Smart Balance. Sweet, creamy, buttery, and just enough cinnamon to complement the flavor. This was worth heating up the oven in 90 degree F weather. :D I lined my baking sheet with foil for easy clean-up. I ate this by itself for a late lunch and it was a nice treat, and a tasty alternative to regular baked potatoes. Thanks Tish! :)
