This is a South African side dish - great with Boboti or Curry dishes
Make and share this Baked Geel Rys (Yellow Rice) recipe from Food.com.
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 2 teaspoons turmeric
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 2 lemon slices
- 2 teaspoons butter
- 5 cups boiling water
- Preheat oven to 350°F In large casserole dish, combine rice, tumeric, cinnamon, salt, sugar. Stir to distribute spices even. Pour boiling water over rice, add butter, stir to mix, and add 2 lemon slices (with rind), thickly sliced, on top. Make sure there are no seeds in lemon slices. Cover dish and put in oven, bake for 25 to 35 minutes until water is absorbed and rice is tender.
- You can also make this with brown rice, just increase amount of water to 6 cups and increase cooking time to 45 to 60 minutes.
