This authentic homemade tortilla recipe will bring you to old Mexico. They take a little time, but the flavor is well worth it. Fresh, Hot & Delicious.

Ingredients Nutrition

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix in the lard/margarine with your fingers until the flour resembles cornmeal. Add the water and mix until the dough comes together; place on a lightly floured surface and knead a few minutes until smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into 24 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
  2. Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Use a well-floured rolling pin to roll a dough ball into a very thin, round tortilla. Place into the hot skillet, and cook until bubbly and golden; flip and continue cooking until golden on the other side. Place the cooked tortilla in a tortilla warmer; continue rolling and cooking the remaining dough.
  3. Store in ziplock bag and re-warm in microwave or oven. If using microwave, wrap tortillas in moist (not wet) paper towel to steam them back to life.

Way too much water in this recipe! I kneaded an additional cup of flour into the dough and it was still too wet. I ended up throwing it away and starting over with less water.

I decided to try my hand at making homemade tortillas and really had a great time. I just purchased a tortilla press, so this really wasn't difficult at all to do. I made 1/2 of the recipe and I took photos from the pressing to the end result for others to see. I used my cast iron skillet to cook them. These are soooo much better than buying them in the store, no comparison. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Made for the "All You Can Cook Buffet" in the cooking games.
