  1. I followed other reviewers' suggestions and cut the sugar, but I went down to 1/4 cup, and then used 1/4 cup of applesauce & agave nectar mixed. I also subbed two egg whites for the egg, a soy and whole wheat flour blend for the flour, and used canola oil instead of butter. And you know what? This was still phenomenal - only without the saturated fat and blood sugar spike! Thank you for posting!

  2. Great recipe, although I used 1/2 c white sugar and 1/4 c brown sugar.

  3. Delicious and easy comfort food! Made the recipe as submitted except added some chopped toasted pecans. Used my mixer and kept expecting it to act like a typical cake, but it didn't. Because of the high ratio of sugar to butter it stayed kind of grainy, didn't really act "creamed" until after the egg was added. There are more apples than batter in the finished product and the batter is on the dry side, which had me wondering if I'd done something wrong, but it was great, and all the apples really make this dessert! I had very good granny smith and honey crisp apples (love this time of year!) resulting in a perfect combination of tart and sweet. Looked done at 40 minutes but wasn't, and ended up adding a total of 15 more minutes. Served warm with whipped cream and additional toasted pecans. Plan to make two more this week for different occasions. PERFECT AUTUMN TREAT!

  4. This recipe appeared in the NJ Bell phone company newsletter in Sept. 1972. I have been making it ever since and even won prizes for it. Simple ingredients and usually the only things I need are the apples.

  5. Delicious!! Used 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup brown sugar for the 1 cup sugar. Added 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg. Doubled the recipe to make in a 9 x 13 pan. Checked after 40 minutes and found I needed to add 1/2 cup apple cider, so the apples wouldn't dry out from baking. Checked in another 1/2 hour and all was done. Let it cool for 45 minutes and dug in. mmm....good!! Tried to mix the apples into the dough and couldn't get the job done, so decided to put the dough on top of the apples, like apple crisp, and bake. If you choose to try the apple crisp way, make sure the dough is sealed over the apples or the apples will dry out.
