This is one of my adopted recipes that has been updated. The original directions were not very well written but this is a nice recipe for apple squares.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Add skim milk and egg whites to dry ingredients and beat well.
  2. Add apples, raisins, nuts, brown sugar and cinnamon to a small mixing bowl. Mix well to combine and layer in the bottom of baking dish. Spread dough on top, making sure apples are covered.
  3. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minute's or until apples are tender and dough is golden brown. Let cool and serve.

These squares are so good Lor. The recipe reminds me somewhat of bread pudding as the dough is so moist and soft. I did mine in an 8x8 glass pyrex baking dish and it took a full 45 minutes to bake. Doing the recipe in a 9x13, you could probably get away with baking the stated 20-30 minutes. What a great treat for the fall time of year.

After reading the other reviews, I upped the cinnamon in mine. I really liked them with loads of cinnamon. I'll make these again because they have made a nice breakfast treat.

These were pretty good, though it was just normal. nothing really exciting about it. I only used 2 apples instead of three and it turned out with that minor change. Other than that I followed everything else. Thanks for the recipe Lauralie41!
