      Beat sugar and shortenig until creamy; add egg; mix.

      Stir in milk.

      Sift flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves twice.

      Add to milk mixture.

      Spread 1/2 batter into a greased floured 9 inch pan.

      Sprinkle with 2nd layer.

      Cover with remaining batter.

      Scatter 3rd layer.

      Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 to 45 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean.
