Apple Cake With Caramel Sauce

"I think the title pretty well explains it. This is a very moist cake with a hint of health--well, it uses whole wheat anyway."

  • Cake:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Cream butter and sugar (less the 1 cup 2 tablespoons of butter for sauce) together.
  • Beat in eggs one at a time.
  • Sift together remaining dry ingredients (less the 1 cup 2 tablespoons of butter for sauce).
  • Add dry ingredients to mixture alternately with chopped apples.
  • Stir in vanilla.
  • Pour into a prepared 9x13-inch pan and bake for 40-50 minutes.
  • Let cool in pan before cutting.
  • Sauce.
  • Combine last 4 ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove immediately.
  • Pour over cake and serve immediately.

  1. Very similar to my recipe, which I'll probably post later. I use 1/2 cup butter for the cake and 1 tsp nutmeg and 1 tsp salt. Great recipe! I love on a savory cake like this, using whole wheat flour.<br/><br/>My butter cream sauce is slightly different... I'm going to try this recipe next time... but for my own reference... here's what is in my recipe: 1 cup butter, 2 cups sugar, 1 cup cream, 1T karo syrup, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/4 t nutmeg. Simmer all 20 minutes.
