I think the title pretty well explains it. This is a very moist cake with a hint of health--well, it uses whole wheat anyway.

Very similar to my recipe, which I'll probably post later. I use 1/2 cup butter for the cake and 1 tsp nutmeg and 1 tsp salt. Great recipe! I love on a savory cake like this, using whole wheat flour.

My butter cream sauce is slightly different... I'm going to try this recipe next time... but for my own reference... here's what is in my recipe: 1 cup butter, 2 cups sugar, 1 cup cream, 1T karo syrup, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/4 t nutmeg. Simmer all 20 minutes.

  1. Cake:.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Cream butter and sugar (less the 1 cup 2 tablespoons of butter for sauce) together.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time.
  5. Sift together remaining dry ingredients (less the 1 cup 2 tablespoons of butter for sauce).
  6. Add dry ingredients to mixture alternately with chopped apples.
  7. Stir in vanilla.
  8. Pour into a prepared 9x13-inch pan and bake for 40-50 minutes.
  9. Let cool in pan before cutting.
  10. Sauce.
  11. Combine last 4 ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove immediately.
  12. Pour over cake and serve immediately.
