I used gala apples and thought during the process that I might not have enough crust for the topping, but it worked out fine. We loved that it wasn't over done with sweetness. I would like to try this again using a tad less butter for the pastry, just because we thought it was too buttery for our tastes. I was greedy enough to stash some in the freezer (cut it up into squares and wrapped in foil) and they still tasted good after defrosting and reheating.

Hubby and I enjoyed this. You have to be careful when brushing on the egg whites because if you don't a big glob of egg white may make your crust taste too eggy. Was great warmed up in the microwave the next day as well. Made for ZWT6 German region.

Prepared for ZWT 4 by 14 yr old DD. Her comments: "Very good and easy to make." Mom's comments: "DD did well on her own except didn't know how to peel apples and she didn't bake long enough." Both: "Thanks for sharing this recipe! We will definitely make it again!"

Before sitting down to review this cake I HAD to copy it into both my cake AND my bars cookbook ~ IT'S OUTSTANDING! Absolutely loved it, as did some neighbors, although I only shared 2 pieces & kept the rest right here under lock & key! Definitely gotta make this one again & again! [Made & reviewed for my jont into Germany during Zaar's World Tour 4]

What a tasty tasty treat. It was very quick and easy to make. We really enjoyed this flavourful cake, the spice combination was perfect. We found it pefect with creme but also wonderful on its own. Thanks for sharing another winner Evelyn.

This is a great apple cake recipe, Evelyn, not overly sweet - though I suppose the sweetness would depend on the apples used. I used granny smiths. I did add about 4 tablespoons of cold water to the pastry (which may have been a bit too much).Quite quick and easy to put together as well. Thanks for a great recipe!
