    Pets'R'us's Note:

For those who are not keen on sauerkraut this dish adds a different mix of flavors. I am Dutch and I like traditional Dutch sauerkraut, with lovely crispy bacon and smoked sausage, mashed together with potatoes. My husband is English, (he can't help it), and finds the dish too sour. So I am forever making up different ways to serve it. This is one of the creations that got his approval i.e. he ate it! The sambal or chili can be left out.

    Directions:

    1. 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
    2. 2
Drain the juices from the sauerkraut, replacing it with the juice from the pineapple can.
    3. 3
Gently simmer this in a pan on the stove for about 15 minutes, give it a stir now and then.
    4. 4
Fry the onion and garlic in some butter until soft, then add the curry powder and sambal (if using) and fry for another minute or two Drain the sauerkraut, there might be no liquid to drain, and mix this with the onion mixture, pineapple chunks and the bell pepper.
    5. 5
Take small amounts of this mix and put on the ham slices, roll them up.
    6. 6
Grease an oven proof dish with some of the butter, put what is left of the sauerkraut in the bottom of the dish, sprinkle a ΒΌ of the cheese on top, then put the ham rolls on top of that.
    7. 7
Mix the leftover cheese with the breadcrumbs, top the dish with that and some small flecks of butter.
    8. 8
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, serve with mashed potatoes.

This is great way to have sauerkraut that the whole family enjoys! I made a few changes due to my shopping errors. Instead of the chili paste I used green curry paste (I could have sworn it said green chili paste in the store) and I bought the wrong kind of ham (too thick). Because I bought the wrong kind of ham I changed the instructions a bit starting with step 5. I put some of the sauerkraut mixture in the bottom of the casserole and sprinkled with cheese (I used emmenthaler). Step 6 -- cut up ham in chunks and mixed it with rest of sauerkraut mixture in pan. Step 6b--put mixture in casserole on top of cheese. Followed remainder of instructions as written. Delicious with Sage and onion wheat bread recipe#94847. Thanks for sharing -- we will definitely be making this again, following the directions as written next time!

What a great mix of flavors! Instead of the sambal I used 1/4 t cayenne pepper. I used gruyere cheese and yellow bell pepper. I had enough to fill 5 ham slices. We loved the combination of all the different flavors. This was a really nice dish that we look forward to having again!
